Was Rabbi Silverman along for the ride and the Kennedy assassination? Or was he involved in a greater way?
I think Rabbi Silverman was used like so many other people.
I think the planner used him as an entry point into Dallas, Texas.
Rabbi Silverman was a member of conservative Judaism which sits somewhere between orthodox Judaism and reform Judaism.
Rabbi Silverman’s school, the Jewish Theological Seminary, was set up as a counterbalance to reform Judaism.
Prior to attending the Jewish Theological Seminary, Rabbi Silverman attended Yale.
While at JTS, Rabbi Silverman (RS) met Norman Podhoretz (NP). Certainly, the rabbi must have met NP’s future wife, Mitch Decter (MD) who was a fellow classmate of Rabbi Silverman in 1947, 48.
Both NP and MD were prominent Jewish intellectuals and commentarians in NYC. Both were instrumental in forging neo-conservatism.
What is neoconservatism and what does it entail? Well, in their case, it involves moral living, scholarship, repairing the world, survival of the Jewish state, and confrontation of evil which in their age was and is the Soviet Union. Neoconservatives are definitely Zionists. What they share with reform Jews is less reliance on Jewish laws dictating what Jews may wear and eat.
As a member of this group’s thinking, Rabbi Silverman would be entirely sympathetic to their goals. If the future of Israel was at stake, Rabbi Silverman would offer his assistance and look the other way if need be. When Israel called in 1948, RS was there; he joined Haganah and help fight in Israel’s war for independence (Arab-Israeli war).
If Seymour Bolten were to join the congregation in order to make contact with fellow Zionists of importance to Israel, Rabbi Silverman would not object. This is not to suggest that the rabbi was in on any plans; it is to suggest that he would not look too hard to find anything that might be damaging to the efforts of Seymour Bolten.
Rabbi Silverman was the logical entry point into Dallas.
Rabbi Silverman was connected, and he was of like mind.
He could knowingly or unknowingly provide a safe haven.
